Hillbilly version: Don’t admit to nothing.
I came to or woke up in a strange place. It looked like a hospital. Sure is a strange dream even for
someone used to strange dreams. Funny, I didn’t remember going to bed but then the room was white.
Trying to get a hold on the situation, I looked around. Yep, it was a hospital. Not the first time I woke
up in a hospital. Every time, I wake up in a hospital it’s because I’ve hit my head. You would think I’d
learn. But this dream was different. There was my boss, standing with his arms crossed, grinning like a
cat with a bowl of cream. “So, what’s going on?”
“You fell off the platform and hit your head.”
“Don’t remember falling”. You sure, I wasn’t pushed was my unspoken reply, “We need to get outta
here”. It took a few minutes, paperwork being involved. But we made well our escape. Seems I had lost
almost five hours of my life. Never lost consciousnesses but keep asking what happened until the
decision was made that medic attention was needed. I assured the hospital staff that an appointment
was not needed as I damn sure was not coming back. People die in hospitals. They made the
appointment anyway.
Never been so embarrassed, falling off a platform. Still think I might have been pushed. But the
embarrassment was not over. Oh No! We got back to the office I was told in no uncertain terms that I
was going to be driven home. The boss being bigger, younger, and stronger than myself, the fact that
my truck was being left behind did not sway the discussion. He would pick me up the next morning.
Forty minutes into the fifty minute drive, What do supposed happens? A black bear crosses the road
with twin cubs. I didn’t say a thing.
“Did you see that?”
“What did you see?” Acted like I wasn’t paying attention.
“A black bear and two cubs.”
It’s ok. “Yeah, but was afraid to say anything. I’ve already lost half a day and I wasn’t going to take the
chance that you did not see them.”
We missed the appointment. The boss took the staples out two weeks later on morning break. Had to
assume him if I could take it he could do it. New rule, No more climbing on the platform. Broke that
rule the next day. Didn’t learn a damn thing.
