The writers recognized the need for government but had restrictions: the government was limited in power and answerable to the people. “Deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”. This experiment became the United States.

The problem is not the system. The system works only as well as the personnel running it. There seems to be a problem with just powers. The checks and balances are being challenged. Power to do those things necessary to provide the services that the people cannot do for themselves. Public service is not about becoming a millionaire. Plus, the system has different motives than business ( public good versus profit).
