Hillbilly version: the United States has not had a trade surplus since 1975. We buy more than we sell. Trump assures us that we don’t need them- trading partners. Do they need us? With the added cost of tariffs it might be more profitable for them to trade with others- substitute trading partners. If new trading partner arraignments are made, what would be the incentive to return to trading with people who are untrustworthy. You cannot run a business if you cannot forecast accurately cost and profits. A unstable scenario is a disaster waiting to happen. Short term sales might be made to reduce or eliminate inventory (dumping) but probably will be replaced or discontinued without an adequate profit margin. Trust is destroyed
