Hillbilly version: we celebrated Halloween by dressing up and getting treats. Halloween was a time of changing seasons, the last of the summer and a preparation for winter. The crops have been gathered, stored away and the future looks good. Thanksgiving is coming. The community met at the school gym. The little ones, in particular, wore costumes. Recognition of costumes was given for the scariest one, the most original, and the cutest and these were coveted. Prizes and awards were given. Houses decorated with toilet paper were about the extent of the damage. It was a time of celebration. We were happy.
Today, it is hard to spot the gremlins in their costumes. The gremlins are wearing expensive suits and the halls of Congress are filled with Characters. These characters bring new horrors upon the little ones. Treats are running a little thin. The celebration in the halls is silenced. The House of President has a big hole in the side and is surrounded by yellow tape to keep people out. It is not safe. But the scariest costume received a crown. The atmosphere is filled with dread, uncertainty and no one knows what the future holds.
But in Big Flat, Arkansas, we will gather together. The children will receive treats. There will be an atmosphere of happiness, hope and community. If you are not busy, you are welcome to join us.
