Hillbilly version: Can a leader of a country impose restrictions in regard to air space in other countries or only the country which they represent? This may, on the surface, seem like a stupid question. It is their country. Canada only guards our northern border, has stood beside us, and puts up with criticism from the self appointed ??? of the western hemisphere.
For example, Donnie imposed restrictions over Venezuelan air space for safety reasons. The United States runs Venezuela. The US controls the trade routes in and around Venezuela. There are a lot of reasons given for effectively controlling the economy of another country. *Please share with me any that you think are proper. In fact, there is a lot of rhetoric about borders now in the news. These borders generally are in regard to maritime distances and national security. How far can the nation claim as their sovereign territory. The divisiveness and exclusion of one nation to others has the US on the verge of military conflicts with other nations. The US has ships in the sea lanes off China to keep commerce going.
As a trade negotiation point, what would happen if Canada declared their air space off limits? Off limits because of the increased risk to both themselves and others. But for a fee Canada could allow exceptions. Not a tariff but a toll. A variation of the Fee for canal usage. The distance is shorter, quicker and safer.
How would the United States respond? Would we deny them control over their air space?
I think we need Canada in more ways than one and it is time to stop treating others inappropriately.
Canadians should be “grateful for US support”! Ever hear of NORAD? USMCA?
