Hillbilly wisdom: For twenty years Mountain View School District has served as the depository for public funds provided for the education of all the students in our community. This is no longer the case. Now comes the division of assets.
The Mountain View steering committee’s offer, was narrowly defined and limited by their calculations based upon their interpretation of Act 919, has been rejected.
If better facilities equate with better educational opportunities, the Mountain View campus has benefited disproportionately as compared to the Timbo and Rural Special campuses. This would suggest that the Mountain View School Board has neglected the educational needs of Rural Special and Timbo. This would be a violation of this boards duties as set by the state.
It should be noted that two of three communities in Stone County voted to raise property taxes in support of the school district’s millage request for additional funding.
Mountain View School Board has control of approximately 8 million dollars of public money accumulated over the last twenty years. The accumulated public funds from the last twenty years should be distributed for the benefits of all three newly formed school districts..
A pro rated division based upon student population would be most equitable.
